The renowned publisher has secured a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the development team at their internal studio, which is currently developing the forthcoming third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.
Management Shift Follows Mixed Reception
The new appointee steps into the role of studio head at 31st Union following the dismissal of former leader Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' lackluster initial reveal last autumn.
On Wednesday, the company's top executive a key figure updated employees about this organizational change through an official communication, which stressed that playtesting had revealed the need for a more defined game identity.
The president stated that the team is now overhauling the project with a refreshed vision, aiming to address community desires.
Trend of Strategic Acquisitions
This announcement echoes a similar action taken by 2K Games in August, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to assist with the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.
Here is the full message from Ismailer's announcement:
Hello Everyone—
I know you all just completed your meeting - I trust you’re as thrilled as I am with the good news. Last time I shared you all a update, I stated the following: “I am confident in this team. You all are some of the most motivated and talented developers we have had the pleasure to work with - and we’re excited for that partnership to persist.”
Through your commitment and versatility, particularly over the last year, you continue to prove that.
The community feedback from last autumn’s Project ETHOS testing phase was enlightening. It validated the promise of a action-packed game but made clear we still had refinements needed. It uncovered the need for a sharper identity.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve come. You embraced the input to heart and reimagined Project ETHOS with a revitalized vision - one that’s positioned to deliver on its promise to our fans.
Our confidence in this project grows every day. To boost the remarkable progress you’ve made, I’m excited to introduce Ben Brinkman as the new Lead of 31st Union. Following a period of talks, Ben comes aboard us on Monday, October 20.
His guidance and experience in the competitive gaming genre is extensive, having dedicated the last 15 years producing and leading some of the most popular franchises in gaming, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, Apex Legends.
I invite you all in receiving him next week. We are all looking forward to continue witnessing the evolution of Project ETHOS in the weeks to follow.
The President
Experience of the Incoming Leader
Brinkman currently holds the position of senior developer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. Brinkman earlier was employed at Treyarch and Activision in multiple development positions on the Call of Duty series, and, prior to that, had stints at other industry leaders.
Title Information and Concept
The upcoming game was revealed in last year alongside a public demo. Initially, the developers portrayed the game as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an exciting step forward on the category."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in real-time to match your preferred approach," the official summary states. "Face the opponents with fresh skills, risks, and tests that evolve every round. Will you leave securely with your valuable rewards? Or aim high, gamble everything, and hope your group can earn top ranking? The option is up to you."
The game does not have an confirmed debut schedule or supported systems, but players can expect additional details as creation advances.
