As any prominent awards ceremony nears, there’s always a demand to include fresh award types to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague has already made supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. This is the request: We need an award type for logic-based games.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains an essential concession within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.
Present Award Structure
Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.
Acknowledgment Issues
Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.
- An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything that year
- Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Only a few puzzle games scraped into niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often small games, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among the most-played games globally continuing this trend for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.
Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home in important events. Puzzle game makers operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
